Scribner Covered Bridge, Located in
Johnson, Lamoille County, Vermont:
One of Vermont's famous & historic covered bridges is named the
"Scribner" Covered Bridge. Thanks to Russ and Anita Walters for
bringing this to our attention! The bridge crosses the Gihon River and
carries the Loop Road (Town Highway 33). The bridge is 47.8 feet long,
12.4 feet wide, 9.3 feet high at trusses, and 12 feet high at the center.
The builder and date of construction are unknown. The cover may have
been added around 1919. The half-height walls of this bridge, together
with the historical documents found by state constultants, indicate that
originally this was a pony bridge, without sidewalls and a roof. Leroy
Scribner once had a farm near the bridge, and there was a Sam Scribner in
the neighborhood as well. Later, nearby farmer Ellsworth DeGoosh was
for a time associated with the bridge.
Direction: From the Junction of Routes 15 and 100: go northeast 1.5
miles and turn right only Rocky Road. After 0.3 miles, the bridge will
be on the right.
