Gravestone of Edward "The Pioneer" Scribner

Located in Scribner Hill Cemetery, Lower Yard, Otisfield, Oxford County, Maine. Edward: b. 11 Oct 1721, Exeter, Rockingham, New Hampshire; d. 19 Mar 1823, Otisfield, Cumberland [now Oxford], Maine, aged 101 years; Sarah Taylor, his 2nd wife, d. Oct 22 1824. Edward is referred to as "The Pioneer" because because he was the first Scribner to settle in Otisfield, arriving there on foot from Waterborough about 1794 or 1795.

Mary is the sister of Sarah Taylor, Edward's Scribner, Jr.'s wife]; Mary b. abt. 1733, d. 8 Jan 1817; Jonathan Piper b. abt. 1736, d. 6 Jun 1836.

Andrew Jackson ["Jackson"] Scribner

Andrew Jackson Scribner, b. 1 Apr 1820; d. 2 May 1864 during the Civil War at New Orleans, Louisiana, as a member of the 30th Maine Regiment. He married twice: (1) Edner Stone, m. 29 Jun 1845; (2) Robb Cobb, m. 27 Aug 1852. Jackson is the grandson of Joseph Scribner, buried in South Otisfield Cemetery [see below], through his son John ["Bud"] Scribner and his wife Elizabeth.

Joseph ["Uncle Jose"] Scribner & 2nd wife Mary [Polly] Knight

Joseph ["Uncle Jose"] Scribner, b. 2 Sep 1766; d. 21 Nov 1843; m. (1st) Hannah Dockum, 26 Feb 1788; m. (2d) Mary [Polly] Knight, 4 Jun 1806; Mary, b. 16 Oct 1781; d. 16 Feb 1876. Note that Joseph is the grandfather of Cyrus and Edward Scribner (by his first wife Hannah, through his son Harvey Cyrus Scribner), who are also both buried in this cemetery with their wives; he is also the father of Levi Scribner (by his second wife Mary), who is also buried in this cemetery with his wife.

Levi, b. 12 Aug 1814; d. 13 Dec 1896; m. 1 Nov 1935; Ann, b. 28 May 1812; d. 9 Jan 1895. Note that Levi is the son of Joseph Scribner and Mary [Polly] Knight, who are also buried in this cemetery.

Cyrus Scribner & his wives: Hestildah Robinson & Rosilla Moore.

Cyrus, b. 7 Feb 1819; d. 16 Apr 1896; m. {Hestildah) aft Dec 8, 1849; m. (Rosilla), 8 Nov 1859; Hestildah, b. 1 Jan 1828; d. 29 Nov 1858; Rosilla, b. 23 Jun 1831; d. 24 Sep 1905. Note that Cyrus is the father of Charles O. Scribner, who is buried in this cemetery also.

Edward [Deacon] Scribner & his wife Permelia ["Millie"] A. Smith

Edward [Deacon] Scribner & his only wife Permelia ["Millie"] A. Smith; Edward, b. 13 Jun 1830; d. 17 Mar 1907; m. 24 Feb 1855; Millie, b. 23 Nov 1839; d. 24 Jul 1911. Note that Edward is the brother of Cyrus Scribner and the grandson of Joseph Scribner, who are also buried in this cemetery.

Charles O. Scribner & wife Mary E. Parker

Charles, b. 11 Nov 1858; d. 16 Oct 1941; m. twice; 1st time on 23 Sep 1884 to Mary E. Parker. Mary, b.1858; d. 1920. Charles was the son of Cyrus Scribner & Hestildah Robinson, grandson of Harvey Cyrus Scribner & Martha Winship & great-great-grandson of Edward ["The Pioneer"] Scribner, Jr. & Sarah Taylor.

b. 30 Nov 1814; d. 22 Oct 1859; m. Sophia Tolbert. Daniel is the son of John Edwards and Susanna Scribner (she is the daughter of Lieutenant Daniel Scribner and Sarah Goodale, and granddaughter of Edward "The Pioneer" Scribner and his first wife).

John Edwards

Husband of Susanna Scribner; John b. 3 Oct 1777; d. 3 Nov 1849; m. 16 Jun 1807. Note that John is the father of Daniel Scribner Edwards, buried at Green Grove Cemetery, above, in Casco, Maine.

Susan (aka Susanna) Scribner, wife of John Edwards

Susanna is the daughter of Lieutenant Daniel Scribner & Sarah Goodale, & granddaughter of Edward "The Pioneer" Scribner and his first wife. Her tombstone states she was born in 1788, but all known sources record her birth in December 1789; d. 1879.

Caption: "Willoughby Scribner's General Store about 1890. First store in Brimley was located on the west side of Bay Street at the end of Depot Street. Willoughby is standing with a dog on the left side of the store. Others identified are: Andy Reinhard (tallest) and Joel Draper in white coat. Jack Jensen, a long time Brimley resident, worked in this store and carried mail."

Here's a photo from Agnes Standish Scribner, of herself, her sister Nellie, and their friend Hazel Wells [Hazel Wells' sister married Agnes and Nellie's brother, Miles Standish]; Nellie is on the left and Agnes on the right; they are only two years apart, and look almost like twins! Nellie and Agnes Standish are daughters of Annie May Spencer Standish. Agnes Standish (12 Sep 1891-26 Sep 1978), was the wife of Edward Warren Scribner (27 Oct 1896-16 Jul 1940) of Washington State.
