Biography of Charles William ["William C."] Scribner

An article from the Redmond Spokesman entitled 'Bend Man Set Record for Continuous Work' indicates that William [Charles went by his middle name "William"] started sawmill work in 1871 at the age of 11. Charles (along with his brother, Thomas) worked with his step-father, Peter Steele, in Bay City.  While in Saginaw, he was running a double edger machine when his partner quit in 1874 to join Custer's 7th Cavalry. His obituary indicates the reason for his moving through the years: "When the pine was exhausted in Saginaw and Bay City, Michigan, he migrated to Minnesota, and from there came to Oregon." So, William was following job opportunities in the lumber business. [Obituary for William C. Scribner, The Redmond Spokesman, Redmond, Oregon, dated Thursday, June 29, 1944. See 1900 MI census info at U.S. National Archives in Washington, D.C., vol 5, Enumeration Dist 10; sheet 2, line 47; dwelling #25; family #28. As of 1 Jun 1900 William lived in Baraga Twp, Baraga Co., MI. At this time Wm would have been about 38. William obtained a land patent for a 160 acre homestead in Baraga, Michigan on July 30, 1900 [Township 51N; Range 34W; Sections 7 & 18; 160 acres; document #3374, dated 7/3/1900; land office = Baraga]. This purchased would have occurred just after the census enumeration date. Due to the 5-year requirement for obtaining a patent under the May 20, 1862 Homestead Act, I can conclude that William must have originally settled on this land on or before July 30, 1895.

In 1911, he was working in Gemmell, Koochiching County, Minnesota (about 60 miles south of International Falls). William came to Bend, Oregon from Cloquet, Minnesota in 1922. There, he went to work as a tail sawyer for the Shevlin-Hixon Company. With the exception of two years (which he spent in Carson, Skamania County, Washington), he worked for that same company until 1944. He worked as an edgerman in sawmills for over 50 years, and then became a tail sawyer.

A business card for William while he lived in Bend, Oregon states his birthdate [Nov. 5, 1860], his address: 444 DeKalb Ave., Bend, Oregon, and his occupation as a "Dealer in Specialties."

"Obituary from The Redmond Spokesman, Redmond, OR, dated Thur, Jun 29, 1944, entitled 'William Scribner Dies in Pendleton' indicates that the date of death was June 27; that the funeral took place in Bend; that he had a widow named Ella, and 4 sons who survived him: Charles, Tom, Phil, and Aaron. The obituary also indicates a time line for William: he came to Bend in 1922 from Cloquet, MN. He went to MN from Saginaw or Bay City, MI, and had lived in both places prior to MN. He worked in sawmills for over 50 years. The obit states that his funeral was in Bend, so he was probably buried in Bend, Deschutes County, Oregon. His death certificates verifies that his remains were buried in Bend, Oregon.
