James was a teamster and rancher in California. Most likely, he, Sophronia and his brother, Thomas, journeyed to California together in 1851. James' and Sophronia's daughter, Eldora, wrote the following, based on conversations she'd had with Sophronia in 1905 (spelling and syntax are as found in the original writings):

"Mother married Father, in Bridge Water Mass., March 17, 1857 went back to Augusta, Maine where Mothers Old Home was. They Sailed for Calif. coming by Steamer to Panama. Crossed the Isthmus of Panama, and came to Frisco, landing Frisco May the 1st 1858. The Steamer they sailed on was called the Old Snora. (Sonora? Senora?) they then sailed for Stockton. by Boat. and after arriving at Stockton. went out 18 Miles west of Stockton, bought a Farm of A man by the name of McDonald. consisting of 160 acres. This was 4 miles West of Woodbridge. He bought out a Squatters right And payed $200 for this Farm. Father built A Two Story House on this Place. Rolland & Milt, Emma and James were Born on this Place.
Father lost this Place through Mortaguage.
They then moved on the Tone (Lane?) Place, on the Waterloo Road some 8 miles From Stockton. Eldora Louise, & Othello was Borne on this Place. George & Florence was Borne on the Ingles Place. Ernest was borne in Stockton, also Ethel Gertrude. Father used to Team, and go into the Mountains with 16 & 18 Mules, go to Carsen City Nevada. Jackson To the Sheep Ranch, where he had 4,000 Sheep. He Hawled all kinds of Groceries to these Places. was gone Weeks at A Time. The night Flora was born we stayed at Heffernis Home all Night.
Father was Murdered by two Boys. on 15th of August 1897. He was coming around the Race Horse Barn at Lodi and these two boys hit him on the Head with a Coupling pin from A Railroad. They then robed him. There names was Ennis and Stan but did not know for 5 years after who did this. A Mr. Eddie heard Ennis say one day, I did not mean to hit Scrib so hard and Kill him but I did. and I guess i was right. Eddie arrested them" (Comstock, "Stone Family Addendum," ASH TREE ECHO, 15 [op. cit.], 190).
James and son, James, are buried alongside other Scribner relatives in the Woodbridge Cemetery, Woodbridge, San Joaquin County.
Sophronia had worked as a nurse in the 1880's. Her first name, Ann, is shown on their Marriage Certificate issued by Bridgewater, Massachusetts. But, she apparently preferred to be known by her middle name.
James is buried at Woodbridge, San Joaquin County. Sophronia is buried in San Francisco.

John worked in a shoe factory in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts. They lived in a part of that city known as Elmwood Village. He also served as a constable in East Bridgewater.

In 1880, Melvina (then a widow) was operating a boarding house at 25 Albion Street in Boston. Several other widows lived there, along with the other residents.

John was a furniture upholsterer in Haverhill, Massachusetts. His sons, Harry and John, Jr., followed "in their father's footsteps" and were upholsterers, also, in Haverhill.
