For a few years (1862-3), he was Chief of Police. Then, he was in canal public work until 1875, his second firm being Lord, Mudgett & Company. He served on the City Council (1858-9) and was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

They moved to Stephenson, Menominee County, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for a few years, then returned to Colorado before 1920, when he was working as a section hand for the Union Pacific Railroad, living in Watkins, Colorado. He took up farming again before 1930, at which time they were living in Kersey.
