John enlisted as a Private in Co. H, 1st New Hampshire Infantry on 22 April 1861 at the age of 21. That regiment was raised to serve an enlistment of only three months, so, along with the rest of the men in that unit, John was mustered out on 9 Aug 1861, then (one month after he married Irena) re-enlisted on 24 July 1862 as a Corporal in Co. B, 9th New Hampshire Infantry. He was promoted to Full Sergeant on 10 July 1863, and was honorably discharged on 10 June 1865 at Washington, DC. He died from the lingering effects of a war wound on 28 November 1865 (AMERICAN CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS. Ancestry.com).
