During the Civil War, Elias served as a Private in Co. E and, later, Co. K, 29th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted in Co. E of that Regiment on 25 October 1861 at the age of 29. Then, on 13 December 1861, he was transferred to Co. K.
On 24 October 1862, he joined the 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment and served in Co. H. He was captured by Confederate soldiers on 8 May 1864, after being wounded at Laurel Hill (near Spotsylvania) Virginia. He was held as a Prisoner of War in Richmond, Virginia, where he died 1 July 1864 (AMERICAN CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS, Ancestry.com Database, "Electronic").
We would have considered it to be a mistake, to claim that Elias had served in a Pennsylvania unit, except for the fact that, a Civil War Pension Record exists that shows Rhoda applying for a Widow's Pension 15 February 1865, basing that application on Elias' service in Co. H, 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry. On that same Pension Record is recorded a Minor's Pension Application, submitted by William L. Roath, Guardian (Widow's Application #83075 15 February 1865], Minor's Application #145028, Certificate #96532 [4 April 1867], CIVIL WAR PENSION INDEX, Ancestry.com Database, "Electronic").

The 83rd Pennsylvania is regarded as "one of the most proficient regiments in the army." It was also a unit that, during its four years term of service (29 July 1861 - 28 June 1865), had severe losses of men killed, wounded and taken prisoner. As one example, during the battles at the Wilderness and at Laurel Hill (where Elias was captured), the regiment "fought with desperate gallantry and lost over 300 men." Among the many engagements in which the unit took part were Hanover Court House, the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Petersburg, Cold Harbor, Spotsylvania Court House and Gettysburg. At Gettysburg on 2 July 1863, they stood beside the 20th Maine at Little Round Top and helped secure the Union victory there. In all, the 83rd was engaged in 25 battles, two more than any other unit from Pennsylvania.

Before the Civil War, Michael had been a boatman on the Allegheny River. He was not involved with the military until 31 March 1864, when he enlisted as a Farrier (a blacksmith whose specialty was shoeing horses) with Co. M, 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry.
That particular regiment was composed of men principally from the counties of Allegheny, Fayette, Armstrong, Washington, Lawrence, Erie and Warren, and the City of Philadelphia. It was organized in August 1862 to serve three years. The regiment was engaged in numerous battles during that time. Michael joined while the unit was in winter quarters at Martinsburg, Virginia. During the time of Michael's enlistment, the 14th Pennsylvania fought at places such as Woodstock, Richmond, Bunker Hill, Winchester, Millwood and Ashby's Gap (to name only a few), all in Virginia. After Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender, the regiment was stationed for two months at Washington, DC, then moved to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, for a month or so, before being mustered out on 24 August 1865.

Reuben was a farmer in Johnson, Vermont. His birthdate is not at all certain, for several reasons:
       1. In the 1860 Census of Johnson, wherein he is recorded twice (once on Page 817, and again on Page 822), on Page 817, his age is recorded as being 48, which would mean that he was born in 1812,
       2. In the 1870 Census of Johnson (M593, Roll 1621, Page 133A), his age is recorded as being 56, which would mean he was born in 1814,
       3. In the 1880 Census of Morristown (T-9, Roll 1345, E.D. 128, Page 463A), his age is said to be 67, which would mean he was born in 1815 (Also, in the 1870 and 1880 Censuses, his place of birth is incorrectly said to be New York).
