On 3 September 1862, George enlisted as a Private in Co. C, 6th New Hampshire Infantry. He was granted a disability discharge (the result of severe sun stroke)on 14 January 1863 at Baltimore, Maryland.
 After returning to New Hampshire, he worked on a farm ion South Hampton until, in the early 1870's, he and his growing family moved west to Iowa. There, he worked as a teamster and stage coach driver.
 In his notes about George in his ONEWORLDTREE submission, grandson John Prescott Johnson states that "while driving stage coach [George] sang, tenor. Once a singer from a national opera company was on the box with him while he sang, and remarked he had reached notes few can."
 George and Elizabeth are buried in the southwest corner of the Methodist cemetery in Melrose, Monroe County, Iowa.

Sanders, his parents (Henderson and Lucy) and family, moved from Owen County, Indiana, to Monroe County, Iowa, sometime between 1860-1870. After their marriage, Sanders and Emma lived for a short time in Milledgeville, Appanoose County (where he worked a farm), until moving west to Republic County, Kansas, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Sanders was a farmer.
