When he registered for the World War I Draft, Carlton was living in Hayden, Routt County, Colorado, working as Hardware Manager for the C. O. Furlong Company. By 1930, he had his own ranch in Riverside, Wyoming.

After Ethel died, John went to live with, and was raised by, his maternal grandmother, Anna Carver Whitmore, in Humboldt County, California.
 As a young man, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. At the end of his first hitch, he was in San Diego, where he met his ailing father, Curtis. John lived with his father until Curtis died. Then, John had Curtis buried in Los Angeles.
 John eventually went on to serve a total of 20 years in the Navy. His World War II enlistment was from 16 September 1942 -14 September 1945.
 John is buried in the U.S. Veterans Cemetery at Ft. Snelling, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In 1930, Everett was a high school teacher in Greenville, Illinois. In later years, he taught at Freeport, Illinois. Everett's exact date and place of death are unknown. He and another Freeport man were the subjects of an intensive search after they were reported missing on 19 February 1976, and have never been found.
