Bertrand was living with his parents and grandmother, Betsy, in 1900 in Henrietta, Jackson County, Michigan. After the family moved to Salem, New Hampshire, he and Sarah were married. He worked there as a motorman for the Manchester street railway. They then moved, before 1930, to Searsmont, Waldo County, Maine. In 1930, they were foster parents to 4 children.

After the family moved to Salem, New Hampshire, Harold and Mary (whose parents were born in Portugal) and family lived there for a short time (he worked as a woodworker in a factory there), then moved on to Boston. In 1930, we find Harold in Massachusetts State Prison, while Mary and family lived on West Second Street in Boston.
