Grove served honorably in the Civil War as a member of the 2nd U.S. Sharpshooters Regiment. He enlisted as a Private on 6 November 1861. joining Co. H on 31 December. A little over a year later, on 1 January 1863, he was promoted to Full Sergeant. After being wounded on 6 May 1864 at Wilderness, Virginia, he was transferred from Co. H to Co. S on 16 November 1864 and promoted to Full Quartermaster Sergeant. A few months later, on 20 February 1865, he was mustered out of the service and returned home to Vermont. Among the major battles in which the 2nd U.S. Sharpshooters took part were Rappahannock, 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness and Petersburg.

Fred was a farmworker. In the 1900 Nebraska Census, he gives his occupation as "Merchant and Ranchman." They lived in Sheridan County, Nebraska, for a few years in the early 1900's, then moved back to Morgan, Vermont, by 1910. He died from prostate disease.
