Bela enlisted as a private in Co. 5, 15th Maine Infantry Regiment, on 16 February 1865. By this time, the Civil War was almost over, and the original members of the Regiment (who had enlisted in December 1861) had been mustered out on 18 January 1865 at Martinsburg, Virginia. Bela was among the new recruits and others from Maine who reinforced the unit in sufficient numbers for it to be reorganized and remain in service. The Regiment went to Washington in April 1865, then on to Savannah, Georgia on 4 June. On 13 June, they went by transport to Georgetown, South Carolina, where they were assigned to the 3rd Separate Brigade, Department of South Carolina. Bela died there on 3 September 1865, only 7 months after enlisting. The soldiers who remained until 5 July 1866 were transported to New York, where they were finally paid and discharged.

Loring served one year of the Civil War (27 February 1865-27 February 1866) as a Private in Co. E, 29th Maine Infantry Regiment. One of Emily's first cousins, Abial Hall Edwards, served in that same unit. During Loring's enlistment, the 29th Maine did guard duty at the Washington Arsenal, guarding the assassins of President Abraham Lincoln. They then went to Savannah and Georgetown, South Carolina.

Loring left Emily and Herbert in Malden, Massachusetts, in 1881. He went west to Spokane, Washington, where he began referring to himself as "Frank S. Hart." He married Margaret Hughes and raised a second family. Before 1910, they moved to Tacoma, Washington, where he lived the rest of his life. In the 1910 and 1920 Censuses, he is listed as "Frank S. Hart." Finally, in 1930, he went again by his real name, Loring.
