Joseph served in the Revolutionary War, enlisting from Wrentham as a Lieutenant in Capt. John Lincoln's Company, Col. John Webb's Regiment.
 He was an early settler of Otisfield. Once, he was found guilty of pitching quoits (a game similar to Horseshoes) on Fast Day. This caused somewhat of a scandal, and there was talk of his being tried for this "offense" on a Christian holy day, but "the subject finally died out" (OTISFIELD HISTORY [op.cit.], 410).
