Irene was the daughter of Rev. Yates and Mehitable Higgins. She had a brother, Louis Yates Higgins, who served in Co. H, 11th Kansas Cavalry during the Civil War, and who died about 1880 in Missouri. Louis' wife, Mary, applied for a Widow's Pension numerous times but, because she had mailed Louis' discharge papers to Washington and those papers were never returned to her, she was continually denied a pension. In 1894, Mary (now Mary E. Wolf) prepared a Deposition when she again applied for a pension. In that Deposition, Mary mentions Irene (this mention of Irene is further proof that Irene had married Daniel Willard):

 "3 August 1894
 Deposition A
Both his parents are dead and there is only one sister living and she hasn't seen him for a number of years before the war, not since he was a little boy.
The sister's name is Irene Willard and I think her address is Cedar Falls, IA but I am not sure of that.
 Deponent, Mary E. Wolf"

Daniel was regarded as a very conscientious and sincerely Christian man. His custom was to visit the public schools of Otisfield, where he offered prayer and gave the children wholesome advice. The following episode is recorded in Spurr's HISTORY OF OTISFIELD, page 355:

"One day he was at Mrs. Johnson Knights at about the hour of noon. It wsa Fast Day and some of the boys were asking their mother about dinner, when she replied it was Fast Day, and they must not eat. Mr. Cobb who was hungry, then spoke up and said it was not intended to go without eating, but we ought to fast from our sins and let the oppressed go free. So he got his dinner."
