Thanks to Daniel Williams for Scribner family information from Mahaska County records.
After living in Licking County, Ohio, for a while, Nicholas and Nancy moved west to Eddyville, Iowa, in 1842. He operated one of the first hotels (The Valley House) in the area. The Scribner's Addition to the town is named in Nicholas' honor, reflecting the esteem in which he was held there. He had built the first house in Eddyville, in 1843. It was a four-room hewed log two-story house. The family had lived in a wigwam until the house was finished (From an article in the "Eddyville Tribune," 24 August 1906).
