Fred was a farmer in Otisfield, Maine. In his obituary, it is said of Fred that "he loved his neighbors and the village children. He liked to give candy and ice cream to children and was often thoughtful of them on their birthdays." Also, he was very active in the Masonic Lodge. Fred and Carrie had no children of their own.

Carl graduated from the University of Maine College of Law, graduating with honors in 1914. In 1916, he graduated from Bowdoin College. He was the Justice of the Municipal Court in Presque Isle, Aroostook County, Maine, for several years. He was also elected president of the Presque Isle National Bank in 1928 (just in time for the beginning of the Great Depression). In several other ways (church, service organizations, lodges and fraternities) he was deeply involved in the life of Presque Isle.
