Herbert and Clara left Maine about 1883 and traveled by train to Humboldt County, California. There, he worked for the Dolly Varden Mill as a woodsman cutting down redwood trees. After hearing of this skilled woodsman, another mill operator, Noah Falk in Elk River, hired Herbert away for higher pay. Herbert was an influential citizen of Elk River. He is remembered for being active in the construction of a church, and for being the Director of a Sunday School of 60 children.
