David was a Civil Engineer and noted engraver. He served three enlistments during the Civil War. First, he enlisted 6 September 1862 as a Private in Co. E, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry, where he served only 3 weeks, until 25 September 1862. Second, he enlisted 30 June 1863 as a Private in the Independent Battery I, Pennsylvania Light Artillery, where he was promoted to Corporal and served until 9 January 1864. Third, he enlisted 5 February 1864 and served as a Mate and Acting Ensign in the U.S. Navy, being honorably discharged on 1 November 1865.
 David lived in several places: Lancaster, Reading and Kutztown, Pennsylvania from 1865 to 1870; Philadelphia, 1870-1878; Boston, Massachusetts, 1878-1881; Philadelphia, 1881-1882; New York City, 1882-1893; and Yonkers, New York, with Florence, 1893 until he died in 1913.
 David and Florence had two children born between 1900-1910. Both had died by the time of the 1910 Census.

Edwin worked for "The Engineering News" from 1889 to 1904, until failing helath forced him to seek work in the out-of-doors. After two years of travel in Europe and at home, he bought a farm in Bethlehem, Litchfield County, Connecticut. By 1930, they had retired to Yonkers, New York. Edwin and Sarah had no children.
