Walter was a farmer. He owned a large farm (once known as the Bird place) on Cobble Hill outside of South Paris. On 20 April, 1927, an early morning fire destroyed many of the farm's buildings. The fire began of unknown origin in the barn about 4:00 a.m. The monetary loss was figured at $10,000. The greater loss was the death of Walter, who tried in vain to put the fire out, and inhaled a lot of smoke in the process. He was hospitalized at the State Hospital in Augusta, because he had also been affected mentally by the fire.
