Winnifred graduated from Carroll College in 1919 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She then taught school for two years in Laona, Wisconsin, and two years in Reedsburg, Wisconsin. Memberships included the First Presbyterian Church in Oxford and the Oxford Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Winnifred volunteered at the Methodist-Meriter Hospital in Madison for several years.

Joseph served in the 29th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. His left arm was badly damaged during the war. After moving to Michigan, he worked in a sawmill, then as a salesman and, for several years, was a Postmaster. While working at the sawmill, he lost his right hand in an accident (Upton, HISTORY OF THE WESTERN RESERVE [op.cit.], 1125).
