Sarah and her daughters first appear in the 1907 City Directory of Columbus, Ohio. She is listed as "widow of C L." A search of the Columbus City Directories for several years leading up to 1907 yielded no mention of a C. L. Bach. Nor is there a C. L. Bach in the entire 1900 Census of Ohio.

James' first wife, Amy, was born in England. In the newspaper article [op. cit.] about her death by suicide, her age was said to be "about 32 years old." The article also states that she "leaves husband James and a seven-year-old son."
 Tragedy struck the family a second time when, on 6 January 1930, a house fire claimed the lives of Florence (age 6), Josephine (age 3), and Alva (age 3 months). Their funeral was held at Thompson Funeral Home in Conneaut on 8 January, and they were buried together, in one casket, in Evergreen Cemetery, Painesville.
 James is buried near his parents in Evergreen Cemetery, Painesville.
