In 1920, Merton and Vena (listed in the 1920 Census as Merton and Vena Scrivener) were living in Winchester, Massachusetts (a town a few miles northwest of Boston and near Lexington). He was a clerk at a lumberyard. By 1930, he'd become the superintendent of the lumberyard. Merton served as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, serving in the Philippines and China. He and Vena had no children.

After working with brother Jesse at Scribners Mills and in the failed Florida enterprise, Bourdon settled at East Hiram and operated the mills there. He died after being struck by an automobile while walking to the Post Office on the evening of 1 October 1941. Royce Rankin, the driver who struck him, apparently was blinded by the lights of an oncoming vehicle and struck Bourdon, who died the next day at a Portland hospital.
