Wilson enlisted in the Army on 17 August 1861, as a Private in Co. D, 32nd Ohio Infantry Regiment. He was accidentally killed on 26 September 1862 at Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. The 32nd Ohio lost 150 men during the battle for Harper's Ferry, the result of which was the surrender of the entire regiment by the post commander. They were exchanged in January 1863 and went back into battle in Mississippi.

At age 18, on 17 November 1861, William enlisted as a Private in Co. C, 65th Ohio Infantry Regiment. That unit took part in battles mainly in Tennessee (Shiloh, Missionary Ridge, and others) and Georgia (Chickamauga, Dallas, and others). He was killed in action at the Battle of Big Shanty, Georgia, on 18 June 1864.
