Eugene has the distinction of having been the first white child born in Fair Haven Township, Stearns County, Minnesota. He was raised on the Day family farm in Maine Prairie Township. As a young man, he bought 40 acres of land in Maine Prairie. On that land, he built the buildings and cultivated the land that became known as the "Pioneer Farm." His was a very successful farming operation.

Rockwell was a Private in Co. G, 14th Maine Infantry Regiment in the Civil War. He enlisted after 2 July 1862, at age 15, and went to the regiment which was already serving in Louisiana. Very likely, he was mustered out in January 1865. But, he evidently re-enlisted because his service record shows that he later served in Co. E of the 14th Maine from 24 February through 28 August of 1865.

 A Rock H. Scribner, born in Maine and aged 21, is listed in the 1870 Census of Gibraltar Township, Door County, Wisconsin. He gives his occupation as Teamster (NARA Microcopy M593, Roll 1712, Vol. 6, Page 34A, Dwelling 65, Family 65). He was living at a boarding house in Gibraltar.
