In 1900, Calvin was a bank clerk in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1910, he was living in Roundup, Fergus County, Montana, employed at a hardware store there. By 1917 (when he registered for the World War I Draft) he was living in Tacoma, Washington, working for a railroad. By 1930, he'd moved on to San Francisco. Calvin nver married.

In 1920, John and his widowed mother were living in Denver, Colorado (1920 Census of Dever: T625, Roll 162, E.D. 233, Page 16A). They had moved there prior to 1918, after having lived for a time in Chicago (he applied for a Passport as a resident of Chicago in 1913). Most of his working years were spent as a civil engineer for the State of Colorado.
