At the time of their marriage in 1907, Joseph was a baker. By 1910, he was a grocery salesman. Later, he worked as an insurance salesman in New Philadelphia, Ohio (1920), then as an adjuster for a fire insurance company in LeRoy, Medina County, Ohio, where they were living in 1930. After 1910, he began going by his middle name, so in the Censuses, he is listed as J. Earl or Earl J.

William was a carpenter/contractor in Mt. Vernon, Ohio.
 In the 1880 Census of Batemantown, Knox County, Ohio (T9, Roll 1038, E.D. 141, Page 35B), William is listed with the family of William Haire (father of Cyrus Hair, who married Elma Denman, and William's mother, Phebe Hair) as a grandson. In the 1930 Census of Mt. Vernon, Ohio (T626, Roll 1826, E.D. 42-8, Page 39B), living with William, Jennie and Harold was Oscar Denman, William's father.

Earl was a soldier in World War I. He enlisted in the National Guard on 11 May 1917 and served in Battery E, 134th Field Artillery. From 28 June 1918 to 2 April 1919, he was in Europe with the American Expeditionary Forces. On 16 April 1919, he was honorably discharged from the Army (OHIO MILLITARY MEN, 1917-18. Ancestry.com.  In 1930, he was the proprietor of the Chesterville Garage in Chesterville, Ohio.

From his father, William took over ownership and operation of the Chesterville Garage. He had served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and was a member of the American Legion. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fredericktown. Apparently, he never married.

William worked as a plasterer. He and Addie divorced sometime between 1900-1910. He then moved to Oklahoma, along with his son, Charles. In 1910, they are found living and working in Skiatook, Tulsa County, Oklahoma (Census: T624, Roll 1274, E.D. 223, Page 74B). In that 1910 Census, he lists himself as being widowed, and gives his age as 55.
