Ambrose moved to Ashland, New Hampshire, in 1849. See brother Franklin's NOTES (below), for information about some of their business dealings. Ambrose sold out his interest in that joint venture and acquired an interest in a shoe-peg mill, which had been established by Jesse Ladd and Aaron M. Gordon. He later built a mill of his own. In town affairs, he was Ashland Town Treasurer four years, and also served as a selectman.

Franklin moved to Ashland, New Hampshire, about 1843. After his brother Ambrose arrived there in 1849, they ran a shoe manufacturing company for a Massachusetts firm for about five years. In 1855, they joined with W.P. Drake in buying a Manila paper and straw-board manfacturing business, which they operated for several years. Franklin sold out his interest in that business and, with brother Lewis, built a paper-mill which they sold to Wilder & Co. in 1871. That mill burned in 1884. Beginning in 1880, he was treasurer of the Ashland Savings Bank (Hamilton Child, GAZETEER OF GRAFTON COUNTY, N.H., 1709-1886. Syracuse, NY: H. Child, 1886, pp. 130-131).
