James was a farmworker in Middlesex, Washington County, Vermont. During the Civil War, he served for 10 months (30 July 1864-19 June 1865) as a Private in Co. D, 2nd Vermont Infantry. He is listed in the 1890 Census of Middlesex, Vermont, Veterans Schedules, Roll 105, E.D. 209, Page 3. It appears that he was quite ill at the time of that Census.
