Luke served during the Civil War as a Private in Co. K, 38th Ohio Infantry Regiment. He enlisted on 11 December 1863 and was discharged at Louisville, Kentucky, on 12 July 1865. He was partially disabled, due to broken ribs. Among the battles in which his unit took part were Chickamauga, Georgia (September 1863), Missionary Ridge, Tennessee (November 1863), Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia (June 1864), Atlanta, Georgia (July-August 1864), and Nashville, Tennessee (December 1864).
