His first position was as Curator of the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy. In 1940, he was Administrator of the Worcester Museum of Art in Worcester, Massachusetts. During World War 2, he served in the Office of Secret Services (OSS) documenting works of art that had been confiscated by the Nazis, then seeing that they were returned to their rightful homes. In 1947, he became Director of the Division of the Arts at Yale, and was Dean of the School of Architecture and Design.
In 1957, Charles moved on to Michigan, where he became Director of the University of Michigan's Museum of Art. While there, he created the first-of-its-kind program in museum practice, training museum adminstrators. A section of the pending addition to the University of Michigan Museum of Art to become a Center for Museum Studies will be named in his honor (Charles Henry Sawyer Obituary, "Chelsea Standard," Chelsea, Michigan, 3 March 2005).
