Hiram enlisted as a Private in Co. C, 13th Vermont Infantry on 10 October 1862, and was mustered out 21 July 1863. He re-enlisted on 18 August 1864 in the 3rd Vermont Light Artillery. He took part in the battles at Gettysburg, Petersburg and Richmond, and was mustered out 15 June 1865 (AMERICAN CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS. Ancestry.com).
Trades at which he worked were carpenter and steam engineer. He lived in Richmond, Wisconsin (1866-1869), Smithland, Iowa (1896) and Atchison, Kansas.
Hiram was also one who gave "fine help" in compiling THE HISTORY OF THE SCRIBNER FAMIILIES [op.cit.].

In 1900 Ben was serving in the U.S. Army at a base at Abucay in the Philippine Islands. He was a musician. After he was discharged, he went to work on the railroad. In 1910, he was a boilermaker at a roundhouse in Sterling, Logan County, Colorado (Helen and the children were living with her father in Denver). By 1930, they had moved to Seattle, Washington. In 1930, he listed his occupation as "Clerk - RR." Later, he worked as a machinist at a shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. He died in the Army Hospital at Fort Lewis, near Tacoma, Washington.
