Albert was a house painter. Within three years of their marriage, he and Sarah had moved to Janesville, Wisconsin (1870 Census of Janesville: M593, Roll 1736, Page 231).
 He served two enlistments during the Civil War. On 7 May 1861, he enlisted as a Private in Co. D, 2nd Vermont Infantry, where he serevd unbti being mustered out 29 June 1864. Two months later, on 17 August 1864, he enlisted in Co. E, 7th Vermont Infantry, and served until being mustered out on 25 July 1865. Among the battles in which the 2nd Vermont participated were: Bull Run (21 July 1861), Lee's Mills (16 April 1862), Antietam (September 1862), Gettysburg (July 1863), Colh Harbor and Petersburg (June 1864). The 7th Vermont was in Florida when Albert joined them. During that enlistment, he saw action at Pensacola, Florida, and Mobile, Alabama (AMERICAN CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS. Ancestry.com).
