William served in the Civil War as a substitute for Freeman H. Jameson. He enlisted as a Private in Co. F, 17th Maine Infantry. He was captured a the battle of Chancellorsville, 2 May 1864, and was a prisoner of war at Andersopnville Prison in Georgia, where he was among the thousands of men who died there.

Philip was a farm laborer. In 1880, he was working at a cotton mill in Augusta, Maine. He and Augusta moved to Redondo, California, before 1910. He died there in 1913, and Augusta returned to live with relatives. In 1920, she was living with her sister, Clara, in Somervile, Massachusetts. In 1930, she was living with her sister-in-law, Effie Staples (widow of Herbert) in Hallowell, Maine.
 Philip is buried in Los Angeles National Cemetery, Section 23, Row A, Site16.
