Harvey enlisted in Co. E, 10th New Hampshire Infantry Regiment on 22 August 1862. Among the many battles in which he fought (all in Virginia) were Fredericksburg (13 Dec 1862), Siege of Sufolk (11 April-4 May 1863), Drewry's Bluff (14-16 May 1864), Cold Harbor (1-2 June 1864), and the Capture and Defense of Fort Harrison (20-30 Sept 1864). He died of disease at Fort Harrison on 30 January 1865.

From the available records, it appears likely that Charles and Martha moved from Maine to Seward County, Nebraska, in the early 1870's, Martha died a short time after their arrival, and Charles married Emma. At first, Charles had a farm in Staplehurst (by the Big Blue River), Nebraska, but, by 1900, was operating a hotel. Charles and Emma retired to David, Nebraska, where they spent their remaining years.
