Harlan was the Business Manager of The Frank Smith Company in Lancaster, New Hampshire. That company was the largest grain and general store in the North Country area. He was so well-respected that his associates, patrons and friends placed "implicit confidence" in him. He was also very involved in all Lancaster community matters. His life came to a tragic end when, on the afternoon of Sunday, 13 June 1926, while fishing from the apron of a dam near Lancaster, he apparently lost his balance and fell, striking his head on rocks below and drowning. His death was a loss to the entire community of Lancaster.
