In 1920, living in Los Angeles, Earnest was a linesman's helper for the Light and Power Company. He ran afoul of the law sometime in the 1920's, because, in the 1930 Census, he was listed as an inmate at the Los Angeles County Prison Farm in Downey (NARA Microcopy T626, Roll 126, E.D. 19-924, Page 159B, line 89).
