It appears that Gertrude's marriage to Willard was short-lived. As early as 1900, he is found living in Tisbury on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts (T623, Roll 639, E.D. 244, Page 217B). He then moved on to Westborough in Worcester County, Massachusetts, re-married in 1906, and worked at Westborough State Hospital as a storekeeper. His second wife, Georgianna, was from Canada. By 1930, they were living in Northborough, where he ran a store (T626, Roll 965, E.D. 14-243, Page 77B).

Randall enlisted in Co. H, 1st Maine Infantry Regiment on 3 May 1861, for a three-month enlistment. He was mustered out 5 August 1861 in Portland.
The 779 men of the 1st Maine (most of whom were members of highly esteemed organizations in the state militia before entering the service of the United States) did not leave the state until 1 June; their departure was delayed because of illness. When they reached Washington, they were assigned to guard duty, protecting the capitol until August 1, when their term of service expired.
On 29 August 1862, he enlisted as a Sergeant in Co. D of the famous 20th Maine Infantry Regiment. During the next two years, he saw a considerable amount of action as a member of that unit, including the 20th Maine's valiant stand at Little Round Top at Gettysburg in July of 1863. He was mortally wounded during the gallant charge at Peebles' farm on 30 September 1864. He died from those wounds on 15 October 1864.
