Hacker was born Isaiah Hacker Davis, the name given him by his parents. However, it appears that, after the 1860 Census, most likely when he joined the Army, he chose to thereafter be known as Hacker Davis. He enlisted on 14 April 1864, to serve in the Civil War as a soldier in Co. I, 31st Maine Infantry Regiment. He was wounded 17 May 1864 at Spottsylvania Court House, Virginia, and was discharged 20 March 1865.
After their marriage, Hacker and Anna lived with her son, Otis Robertson. They were in Pawtucket, Rhode Island for a few years, then moved to Pasadena, California. In 1930, he was registered at the National Military Home in Los Angeles, but was living in Pasadena with Otis and Lorena (NARA Microcopy T626, Roll 168, E.D. 19-1232, Page 216A).
