Clayton learned the printing trade while working for his father at the "Burlington Clipper" newspaper. In 1892, he went into partnership with J.W. Ramsey to publish the "Granite City Leader" in Barre. However, this paper folded in 1896. In 1903, he became the Managing Superintendent for the Bennington "Evening Banner" newspaper.

From 1881-1886, Earle was a messenger in the United States Senate, having been appointed by Sen. George F. Edmunds. From 1886-1888, he was the official reporter for the Vermont State Senate. In 1895, he went into the insurance business, working as general agent for the National Life Insurance Company in Rutland. Earle served as chief of staff for Gov. Fletcher D. Proctor, 1906-1908, and represented Rutland in the Vermont Legislature in 1908, while continuing his work with the insurance company.

In 1900, Karl was living in McHenry Twp., McHenry County, Illinois, and working as a dry-goods salesman with his cousin, Walter E. Bradley (NARA Microcopy T623, Roll 321, E.D. 159, Page 221A). At that time, he was still single. In 1910, living in Waupaca, Wisconsin, he was a salesman for a department store. In the 1920 and 1930 censuses, he gave his occupation as "traveling salesman." He died in 1947 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Michigan.
