Reuel was a lawyer in Portland for several years. By 1900, he and two of his sons, Reuel and Albert, were stenographers for the Cumberland County Court System. The third son, Charles, had his own law practice.

William was a brick mason at Joliet, Illinois, before the Civil War. He served a year in the 20th Illinois Volunteer Regiment, then went to Ohio and married Maranda. They settled in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was a contractor, and made "considerable money," but lost it in the Panic of 1873. They then moved to Conneaut, where he resumed his trade as brick maker and contractor (Dewey, LIFE OF GEORGE DEWEY [op.cit.], 659).

MARTIN'S PARENTS: Martin, Sr., was born in Searsport, Maine, 22 March 1845. Adele was born in Cowlitz County, Washington, 8 March 1854. They were living on Orcas Island in 1880. He died at Friday Harbor 1 December 1889. She died in Seattle 4 March 1928 (Nichols, JAMES NICHOLS (NICKELS) OF SEARSPORT AND HIS DESCENDANTS, 1733-1943 [op. cit.], 42).
Martin, Jr., was a meat-cutter in a meat market. Flora had a home-business, making dresses.
