Benton was the head chain tender for the Elk River Mill and Lumber Company. He died in a woods accident. The newspaper account of the accident states that, while loading logs, Benton was struck in the head by a bicket which had been improperly fastened to the fall rope. The engine started, the strain on the bicket then threw it with great force, and it struck Benton, crushing his skull. For his funeral in Arcata, a large number of carriages, filled with his friends, came in a procession from Eureka. They were joined by many other friends and acquaintances in Arcata ("The Arcata Union," Arcata, California, 13 october 1888, Page 3). Benton certainly was a well-liked man.
