Joseph served in the 29th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. His left arm was badly damaged during the war. After moving to Michigan, he worked in a sawmill, then as a salesman and, for several years, was a Postmaster. While working at the sawmill, he lost his right hand in an accident (Upton, HISTORY OF THE WESTERN RESERVE [op.cit.], 1125).
