Lyman was a Veterinarian. In his youth, he was an outstanding long distance runner. While in college at Central State Teachers Collge (now Univ. of Wisconsin at Stevens Point), he hitchhiked to Milwaukee to participate in an NCAA meet. He won second place in the 10,000 meters (Junior Division). He later attended Michigan State University and earned his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. He then moved to Florida, where he had his practice.
He was involved with the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a faithful church attender at First United Methodist Church in Orlando.
